Husain Abdullah

Former NFL Safety
Biography

Football and Purposeful Leadership

Husain Ibn Muhammed Abdullah (born July 27, 1985, in Los Angeles, California) is a former professional American football safety, recognized for both his athletic prowess and his commitment to his faith. Raised in a large family of twelve siblings in Pomona, California, he attended Pomona High School, where he excelled in football and served as team captain. Abdullah continued his athletic career at Washington State University, becoming a three-year starter for the Cougars.

In 2008, despite going undrafted, Abdullah signed with the Minnesota Vikings, where he played until 2011. During his tenure, he accumulated 167 tackles, including six for loss, two sacks, four interceptions, and 11 passes defended. Demonstrating dedication to his Muslim faith, Abdullah chose to sit out the 2012 NFL season to undertake the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, accompanied by his brother, Hamza Abdullah, also an NFL player.

Abdullah returned to the NFL in 2013, signing with the Kansas City Chiefs. He played three seasons with the Chiefs, contributing significantly to their defense. Notably, during a Monday Night Football game on September 29, 2014, he intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown. His subsequent prayerful celebration drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, which the NFL later acknowledged as incorrect, clarifying that religious expressions are exempt from such penalties.

Throughout his seven-season NFL career, Abdullah played in 97 games, recording 288 total tackles, 2.5 sacks, six interceptions, and two defensive touchdowns. Citing health concerns, particularly multiple concussions, he announced his retirement from professional football on March 28, 2016.

Post-retirement, Abdullah pursued a master’s degree in conflict resolution at Southern Methodist University. He has been active as an executive coach, keynote speaker, and advocate for mental health and spiritual well-being. Additionally, he co-founded the Ashab Network, aiming to support Muslim athletes, entertainers, and influencers.

Abdullah’s journey reflects a harmonious blend of professional achievement and personal faith, inspiring many through his dedication on the field and his commitment to his beliefs and community off the field.
